  1. Installing NetWare Workstation for Windows
  2.  
  3. The NetWare Workstation for Windows diskette contains files to 
  4. update your NetWare device driver files, load NetWare Tools, and 
  5. update your NetWare C Interface for Windows files (.DLL files).
  6.  
  7. The NetWare Workstation for Windows includes NetWare Tools 
  8. which let you perform certain network tasks. You can 
  9.  
  10. *      Map network drives 
  11. *      Select network printers
  12. *      Attach to or detach from file servers
  13. *      List network users 
  14. *      View volume information 
  15. *      Set or change passwords 
  16. *      Send messages to network users and groups 
  17. *      Block or allow messages from other users
  18. *      Customize your mappings and printer information for specific tasks
  19.  
  20. You can also use the Network icon and the Printer icon in the 
  21. Control Panel to complete some network tasks. 
  22.  
  23. Windows must already be installed on your file server before you install the 
  24. NetWare Tools and drivers on your workstation.
  25.  
  26. Using the INSTALL program 
  27.  
  28. The NetWare Workstation for Windows diskette contains an INSTALL 
  29. program that loads the NetWare drivers, NetWare Tools, and .DLL 
  30. files. INSTALL copies these files to the \WINDOWS and \SYSTEM 
  31. subdirectories in your Windows directory (whether it is on the 
  32. network or on your workstation). It also updates your SYSTEM.INI 
  33. and WIN.INI files. 
  34.  
  35. For specific information about the files that will be updated and 
  36. changes that will be made to your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files, 
  37. select the Help menu in INSTALL and choose "Using NetWare with 
  38. Windows."
  39.  
  40. Consider the following items when installing and configuring the 
  41. NetWare operating system with Windows.
  42.  
  43. Workstation shell files
  44.  
  45. Windows requires that you use workstation shell files (NETx.COM, 
  46. XMSNETx.COM, or EMSNETx.COM, and IPX.COM) version 3.01 or 
  47. later. If your shell files are an earlier version you will get an error 
  48. message when installing Windows. 
  49.  
  50. Upgrading utilities
  51.  
  52. If you use the NetWare BINDFIX utility, you must update it to v1.2. 
  53. (v1.2 is included on the NetWare Workstation for Windows diskette). 
  54.  
  55. Other NetWare utilities may need to be updated to function 
  56. properly with Windows. See Appendix A for a list of these utilities.
  57.  
  58. Show dots = on
  59.  
  60. You should add the following line to your NET.CFG or SHELL.CFG 
  61. file:
  62.  
  63. SHOW DOTS = ON
  64.  
  65. This allows you to see the parent directory [..] when you list 
  66. subdirectories. If you do not use SHOW DOTS = ON, your directory 
  67. listings will not show the parent directory, and you will not be able 
  68. to return to the parent directory after you change to a subdirectory.

  70. Before running INSTALL
  71.  
  72. The first time INSTALL is run, it updates NetWare drivers and other 
  73. files in the Windows \SYSTEM directory. If you are using a shared 
  74. network version of Windows, the system administrator should run 
  75. INSTALL first to update the NetWare drivers and other files. When 
  76. INSTALL is run subsequent times, it will update only the users' .INI 
  77. files.

  79. Before you begin INSTALL, you must
  80.  
  81. *      Exit Windows completely. Do not run INSTALL from the DOS 
  82. prompt within Windows.
  83. *      Be in the directory that contains Windows (or set a path to your 
  84. Windows directory). INSTALL will start Windows.
  85. *      Have Read, Write, and Modify rights in the directory where you 
  86. will run INSTALL and in the \WINDOWS directory. (This does 
  87. not apply if your directories are local directories.)
  88.  
  89. Only one user at a time can use INSTALL. INSTALL uses a temporary 
  90. file that only one user at a time can access. If you receive File 
  91. Sharing Errors in Windows or network errors from DOS, you are 
  92. trying to run INSTALL at the same time as someone else. Run 
  93. INSTALL from a diskette or a directory in your personal network 
  94. workspace, or wait until the other user exits INSTALL.

  96. If you are installing Novell NetWare Workstation for Windows to a 
  97. shared network configuration, all network users must exit 
  98. Windows. Since INSTALL updates the NetWare drivers that are in 
  99. the Windows directories, no one can be using these drivers.

  102. Running INSTALL
  103.  
  104. 1.     At the DOS prompt, type
  105.  
  106. pathname/INSTALL <Enter> 
  107.  
  108. Replace pathname with the full directory path leading to the directory where 
  109. NetWare INSTALL is located.
  110.  
  111. For example, if you are running INSTALL from a diskette in drive A, type
  112.  
  113. A:\INSTALL <Enter>
  114.  
  115. If you are running INSTALL from a network directory, you must include the drive 
  116. letter. For example, type
  117.  
  118. G:\WININST\INSTALL <Enter>
  119.  
  120. (You can use Windows startup flags, such as /R, with INSTALL.)
  121.  
  122. The INSTALL program will load the NetWare Tools files and update other files 
  123. needed to run Windows with NetWare. For help while using INSTALL, choose 
  124. the Help menu. 
  125.  
  126. You will see the NetWare Windows Workstation Services - INSTALL screen.

  128. The screen consists of three parts.
  129.  
  130. System Defaults. Shows the defaults used by your system. It shows
  131.  
  132. *      The type of installation you are performing: a shared network 
  133. installation or a local installation
  134. *      The directory you are running INSTALL from
  135. *      The directory you are installing to
  136.  
  137. Instructions. Lists the steps you need to do to complete the installation. 
  138. Follow the steps in the order listed.
  139.  
  140. Action. Explains what tasks INSTALL completes. It also informs you if an error 
  141. occurs, and gives you steps to correct the error.
  142.  
  143. 2.     Choose README to read important installation information.
  144.  
  145. 3.     Choose OK to begin the installation.
  146.  
  147. After the drivers and files have been loaded, the installation is complete.
  148.  
  149. When you start Windows, the NetWare Tools icon will appear at the 
  150. bottom of the screen. When you choose this icon, the NetWare 
  151. Tools window appears. This window displays icons for the NetWare 
  152. tasks you can complete in Windows. You can also create a Program 
  153. Manager group that contains the NetWare Tools icons.

  155. If you do not want the Novell NetWare icon to appear on the 
  156. desktop, go to "Remove automatic loading" following.
  157.  
  158. To create a Program Manager group that contains the NetWare 
  159. Tools icons, go to "Create a Novell NetWare Program Manager 
  160. group" following.

  162. Remove automatic loading
  163.  
  164. 1.     To remove automatic loading, choose the NetWare Tools icon.
  165. 2.     Select the system menu.
  166. 3.     Select SETUP from the menu. 
  167. The Install NWTools window appears.
  168. 4.     Deselect Load Automatically.
  169. 5.     Choose Install
  170. The NetWare Tools icon will no longer appear on the desktop.

  172. Create a Novell NetWare Program Manager group
  173.  
  174. 1.     To create a Program Manager group that contains the NetWare Tools, 
  175. choose the NetWare Tools icon.
  176. 2.     Select the system menu. 
  177. 3.     Select SETUP from the menu. 
  178. The Install NWTools window appears. 
  179. 4.     Select Create Program Manager Groups
  180. 5.      Choose Install.

  182. This will create a Novell NetWare Program Manager group. This group will 
  183. appear each time you start Windows.
